The Institute of Automatic Control at RWTH Aachen University is specializing in research on modeling and control of complex technical systems. Main focus areas include model predictive control, robust control and networked control systems.

Besides acknowledged methodical contributions the institute emphasizes application oriented research. The six divisions „Automotive“, „Industry“, „Combustion“, „Energy“, „Galileo“ and „Medical“ represent its major areas of application.

The division „Automotive“ is dedicated to the development of innovative control strategies for vehicles and vehicle components. Current applications include intelligent energy management strategies for hybrid vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems. By establishing two test areas for the Galileo global navigation satellite system, the IRT has gained extensive experience in the field of satellite positioning and navigation.

The Institute for Communication Technologies and Embedded Systems (ICE) is jointly directed by Prof. Gerd Ascheid (Chair for Integrated Signal Processing Systems, ISS) and Prof. Rainer Leupers (Chair for Software for Systems on Silicon, SSS), who collaborate closely in research and complement each other with their expertise.

ICE's mission is to contribute to the advancement of Embedded Systems Design with particular focus on the challenges of emerging communication structures.
In allingment with the objectives of CERM, ICE conducts research in the domain of machine-to-machine communication (M2M), sensor networks, and vehicular communication (V2X). The institute is structured into three tightly connected research groups (algorithms, architectures, and tools), thereby having the critical mass to cover all major aspects of system design.

The key research areas at ICE are:

  • Algorithmic and architectural concepts for cutting-edge sensor applications
  • Transmission schemes and receiver algorithms for wireless digital communication systems
  • Hardware and chip architectures for embedded systems, in particular multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoC)
  • Electronic system-level (ESL) design tools for complex integrated circuits and systems

To provide relevant solutions for the modern information society, the developed algorithms must be feasable within the constraints of current and future signal processing systems. This is especially challenging when targeting battery-powered devices. Accordingly, the aforementioned research aspects are tightly related and induce advancements in each individual domain.

Major requirements are:

  • High amount of flexibility, to enable multi-standard systems and short product development cycles
  • Extremely complex signal processing, to achieve best possible quality of service with least possible resource utilization
  • Lowest power consumption for maximum battery operating time, heat reduction, and energy savings

These challenges demand for optimally tailored hardware architectures, such as processors with application specific instruction sets (ASIP, Application Specific Instruction Set Processors), as well as efficient design tools helping to manage the complexity and producing a high quality of result.

 

Lehrstuhl communication science

The Human-Computer Interaction Center at RWTH Aachen University is an interdisciplinary research institute located at the newly established RWTH Campus Melaten and is a derivation of the excellence initiative. The four faculties that form the HCI Center are the Chair for Media Informatics and Human-Computer Interaction, the Chair for Text Linguistics and Technical Communication, the Chair for Computer-Aided Architectural Design and the Chair for Communication Science. The research at the HCI Center focuses on usability, design, development, evaluation of new user interfaces, as well as determination of factors that predict user acceptance of technologies. Guided by industrial demands, research guidelines, and scientific methods the research at HCI Center leads to balanced results out of several disciplines with respect to application and real world demands.

MAT.Traffic

The German company MAT.TRAFFIC creates and develops concepts, procedures, research prototypes and products in the area of road traffic and data networks. The focus of activities lies on local and global traffic state estimation, traffic quality management and road-side applications for co-operative systems. In the context of several research projects MAT.TRAFFIC has realised various co-operative services and assembled thorough theoretical, technical and system integration expertise about co-operative systems.

The main goal of MAT.TRAFFIC within I2EASE is the conceptualization, realisation and evaluation of a co-operative local traffic light control which takes into account the special demands that come with automated driving.
